Mainboard IPO vs SME IPO: Key Differences

By IPO Plus Team

Lot size, minimum investment, listing platform and risk differ between mainboard and SME IPOs.

Mainboard IPOs are for larger, established companies that list on the main NSE/BSE platforms. They have broad retail participation, smaller lot sizes (often around ₹15,000 minimum) and tighter regulatory oversight. SME IPOs are for small and medium enterprises listing on NSE Emerge or BSE SME. They typically have much larger lot sizes (₹1–1.5 lakh+ minimum investment), lower liquidity, and higher risk and reward. For most beginners, mainboard IPOs offer lower entry barriers and more liquidity. SME IPOs can deliver outsized gains but require careful due diligence and a higher risk appetite.
